What “unmanaged” means
It is the single most important thing to understand about what you bought. It is also the reason this works so well for people who know what they are doing.
What we run
- The hardware, including replacing it when it fails
- The network, the routing and the uplink
- Power and connectivity to the rack
- Remote KVM, power control and reinstalls, so you are never locked out
What you run
- The operating system and every update to it
- Your firewall, your users, your keys
- Your applications, databases and configuration
- Your backups. We do not make them.
Why it is set up this way
Because you keep root and nobody else has it. We have no account on your machine, no agent installed and no way to read your disk. That is a feature: your data is yours, and the only person who can change your server is you.
It also keeps the price honest. You are not paying for a management layer you would never call.
What we still do when you ask
We are not going to log into your server, but we will look at a problem with you. Routing, packet loss, a disk that is throwing errors, a port that will not come up at the speed it should — send it over. If the answer is “that is in your operating system”, we will say so, and usually point at where to look.
