Renewals and price changes
Nobody likes a surprise on an invoice. Here is how renewal and pricing work, including the circumstances in which a price can move.
How renewal works
A monthly dedicated server renews each month until you tell us otherwise, with the invoice issued before the period it covers. Colocation runs on annual terms and renews at the end of the term unless notice is given — the notice period is in your contract.
Nothing renews silently in the sense of being hidden: the invoice arrives at the contact on your account before the period starts. Which is why the address on the account needs to be one somebody reads — see who may act on your account.
When a price can change
Your price is the price you agreed, for the term you agreed it. Within a running term it does not move.
At renewal it can, and the honest reasons it might are: the cost of power, bandwidth or hardware has moved materially, or the specification has changed because we replaced something with a different part. When that happens you are told in advance, with the reason, before the renewal that it applies to.
You are not obliged to accept it. A monthly service can be cancelled before the next invoice with nothing further to pay — see cancelling a service.
Longer terms
Quarterly and annual terms are available on dedicated servers, usually at a better rate, and they fix the price for that period. That is a conversation with us rather than a checkbox, because it is priced against what you are taking. See contract lengths and payment terms.
If the renewal no longer suits you
Three options, and we would rather you used one of them than quietly stopped paying:
- Change the specification. Downgrades take effect at renewal rather than mid-term — see upgrading or changing your server.
- Move to a longer term for a better rate, if the service is staying.
- Cancel, in time, and take your data with you — see leaving.
If an invoice goes unpaid
You are reminded before anything happens. Services are not switched off the moment an invoice is late, and we would much rather hear that something is awkward this month than find out by suspending a machine. Talk to us; that is usually all it takes. The formal position is in the terms, and the mechanics in invoices and payment.
Account credit
Credit you hold is applied automatically to new invoices as they are generated, so a renewal can be covered without any action from you. Credit is used against services rather than paid back out — see VAT and cross-border invoicing.
